Flying Paws to the Rescue By Jenny Anderson Just last week the Flying Paws organization “came to the rescue” here in Lake Havasu. Ruby, an older min pin mix had been picked up by Animal Control as a stray, and WAHS had some difficulty contacting her owner, who suffered from MS. As it turned out, both the owner and her mother were disabled, and unable to care for Ruby. They asked our shelter to find her a good home. Since Ruby was originally adopted from a rescue group in Mesa, the rescue had a foster family ready and waiting for her. Once our adoption counselor, Dawn, made contact with the rescue through Petfinder.com, our only problem was transporting Ruby back to her foster family. At this point the Flying Paws folks stepped in. They serve as “Wings of hope transporting rescued animals”, trying to play a part in the rescue of companion animals. The volunteer pilots will fly pets for rescue groups, veterinarians, or recognized animal care organizations, such as Western Arizona Humane Society. On their web site, www.FlyingPaws.org, I found many stories of similar flights made all over the country. Corporate sponsors and donations help pay for the expenses. We are so pleased that our shelter saw what could have been a sad story, end happily. Through the efforts of many individuals and their animal care organizations, Ruby is now settled into a loving home.
